Need direction?

gpsIt seems like everyone has a GPS these days.

Unfortunately, I’m not everyone!

Fortunately, my parents do!

Last summer I borrowed their GPS to find my way while traveling across Michigan.  At one point on the trip I decided to take a different route than what was suggested.  I thought the voice was going to jump out and strangle me!  She was very mad (in a polite manner) since I had blatantly ignored her direction.  “Make a U-turn when possible,” she shouted.  Thankfully the optional road I chose wasn’t too far away.  Shortly after my turn she told me she was “recalculating” and I arrived at my destination without any further disputes.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Christian life came with a GPS?  “Give your life to Christ and receive your free gift!”  How many converts would make their way to the local church?

Sure the Bible gives us direction, a center focus, eye-opening truths about God.  But it doesn’t provide door to door itineraries.

So how does a Christian find clarity?  How do you make critical, life-altering decisions?

Just like I needed to know someone to experience a GPS, we need to know someone – the author and director of our lives.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)

This passage offers us so many truths about our spiritual director:

  • Take hope – others have gone before us
  • Strip sin – get rid of your “optional paths”
  • Start moving – it’s in the step of faith that we often find direction
  • Stay focused – keep your eyes ahead on the goal
  • Be honest – life isn’t easy – you will have detours and pot holes along the way
  • Jesus endured – He is the WAY, it’s not up to us

God is willing and available.  He is constantly directing and guiding our path.  Will you follow today?  Which step above is God prompting your heart to take?
