The baby that changed everything…

It was this time last year that I was very pregnant with my daughter Ryann.  Ryann’s due date was December 25th; a beautiful date for a baby to be born.  As I waddled through the Thanksgiving season into Christmas season, I couldn’t help but think of Jesus’ mother, Mary.  I thought of her emotions.  What it must have felt like to know that she was going to be giving birth to the Savior of the world, the Son of God.  I also thought about her discomfort.  I could hardly drive from my home to my children’s school without being in discomfort from my very large pregnant tummy.  My feet hurt often, as well as every joint from my hips to my knees; as my body was preparing to deliver a baby.

Mary did not have the comfort of riding to Bethlehem in a car.  She was riding on a donkey down a long dusty, bumpy path.  I would imagine that she had the same discomforts of being pregnant that I did.  She must have known that her baby boy would be born soon.  She must have felt anxiety when her husband could not find a proper place for them to rest.  Mary must have questioned how she could give birth to the King of all Kings in a stable on a bed of straw with animals surrounding her.

Yet, when baby Jesus arrived and he was wrapped in swaddling cloths nestled in her arms; I am sure that everything in that moment was perfect.  I know that she saw the beauty of the world in His eyes and she knew without a shadow of a doubt that He was indeed the King of all Kings.  The sounds of His coos must have been music to her ears and the peace of His presence must have been breathtaking.  Mary must have cried tears of joy, as all new mothers do, but with a greater appreciation for this baby than we could even imagine.

As we go through this Christmas season, let us not forget that it is truly about a small baby born in a manger.  A baby that changed everything for the whole world…a baby with the beautiful name of Jesus.

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.  Luke 2:6-7 (NIV)
